The Leabarjan
"Industrial" Perforator Model #8-B
This is a view of the #8-B in the ARTCRAFT Studio in Maine.
There is a large auxiliary cabinet for 16 spools of paper -
which can be duplicated while 'reading' a Master Roll - for
this machine, but ... large rolls of 11 1/4" pretrimmed paper
went off the market around 1980. Until then, I perforated the
first 16 new releases on this machine, and then sent the
Master to the West Coast for duplicating. Today, it's used for
making new rolls only ... or (as shown below) for
reading/remastering old ones to achieve the standards of our Interpretive Arrangements.
The arranger is not
limited to copying a roll exactly, as the perforator's manufacturer suggested,
since one can "read" and ignore the original perforations ...
add new material ... and/or make an entirely new roll, often
using the same notes but giving them the effervescence and
panache
of rolls which bear the ARTCRAFT label.
This is the Leabarjan which was used to
make the ever-popular NEW
KING of RAGTIME Medley-Overture and the 1991
arrangement of BALLET
MÉCANIQUE for Swedish TV-Radio and
subsequently revised as a copyrighted ARTCRAFT release.
Most of our Interpretive Arrangements are created on the
3 Model #5 Leabarjan perforators, as they are lighter and
easier to use. The cast iron parts of the #8-B are massive so
require more muscle power, when moving the punch around in a
single measure of music.
